Steel Structures for the United States
Structural steel for US projects designed and documented to AISC, ASCE 7 and AWS practice, with the submittals and traceability US engineers of record expect.

Market Overview
The US market is specification-driven. Structural steel is normally designed by a licensed engineer of record under the building code adopted by the state or city, which in most jurisdictions is based on the International Building Code (IBC). Steel design itself follows the AISC Specification, loads come from ASCE 7, and welding follows AWS D1.1 (with AWS D1.8 for seismic force-resisting systems).
For imported steelwork, the practical questions are less about design theory and more about documentation: shop drawing approval cycles, mill certificates for ASTM-designated materials, welding procedure qualification and inspection records that the project special inspector can accept.
Codes, Approvals & Regulatory Context
Building codes are adopted locally, so the edition and amendments in force depend on the project location. Public infrastructure work may carry domestic-content conditions (for example "Buy America" or "Buy American" provisions on federally funded projects) that can restrict or exclude imported steel. These conditions must be confirmed with the owner before a supply strategy is chosen.
Engineering for this Market
Typical engineering deliverables for US work include connection design or delegated connection design calculations sealed where the contract requires it, erection drawings and anchor rod layouts, and shop drawings submitted for engineer-of-record review. Imperial units (ft-in, ksi, kips) are standard on drawings.
Fabrication Considerations
Material is usually specified to ASTM designations such as A992 for wide-flange shapes, A572 or A36 for plates and A500 or A1085 for hollow sections. High-strength bolting follows the RCSC Specification, with pretensioned or slip-critical joints identified on the design drawings.
Quality Requirements
- Mill test reports traceable to each piece mark and heat number
- Welding procedure specifications and welder qualifications per AWS D1.1
- Third-party or special inspection access under the IBC Chapter 17 regime where required
- Fabricator quality programme frequently required by specification (AISC certification is commonly requested)
Coating Requirements
- Shop primer compatibility with field-applied fire protection
- SSPC/AMPP surface preparation grades referenced in specifications
- Hot-dip galvanizing to ASTM A123 for exposed or corrosive conditions
- Faying surfaces of slip-critical joints masked or coated with qualified slip-class coatings
Certifications Typically Requested by Clients
- AISC Certified Fabricator programme (often specified)
- AWS-qualified welders and CWI inspection
- Compliance with project "Buy America" clauses where applicable
Export & Logistics
Steel is shipped in containers or as break-bulk to East, Gulf or West Coast ports, then trucked to site under state oversize-load limits. Piece weights and lengths are planned around permit thresholds, and erection sequence drawings drive the loading order.
