Sector challenges
Challenges We Engineer For
Wind-induced response of slender towers
Our engineering response We assess along-wind and across-wind effects and adjust bracing, section shape or damping provisions to control deflection and fatigue.
Project-specific acceptance criteria
Our engineering response Performance targets are agreed and documented at the start, and the design report shows how each one is met.
Safe access and fall protection
Our engineering response Stairs, ladders, cages and guardrails are designed to the access and safety regulations of the destination market.
Remote or difficult sites
Our engineering response Bolted, galvanized assemblies with kitted fasteners reduce site welding and simplify assembly by local crews.
Engineering Solutions
Towers, platforms, access structures and equipment supports are governed by performance criteria specific to their function. Our engineering team starts by defining those criteria with the client, such as tower top deflection for antennas or instruments, platform stiffness under operating equipment, or access loads and guarding requirements. Slender structures are analyzed for along-wind and across-wind response, and fatigue is assessed where cyclic loading is present.
Connection design focuses on bolted tower splices, base plates and anchorage, and equipment interfaces where machinery or vessels impose dynamic or thermal loads. We follow the code basis of the project, for example AISC 360 with ASCE 7, CSA S16, AS 4100 or EN 1993 with EN 1991 wind actions.
Engineering Considerations
- Project-specific performance criteria and acceptance
- Dynamic and wind-induced response of slender structures
- Access and fall-protection requirements
- Bespoke connection and fabrication details
One coordinated scope
From Engineering to Delivery on Site
Design optimization, fabrication, quality control, surface protection, export logistics and erection support managed as one scope, so interfaces between design, shop and site stay under control.
-
Design Optimization
For towers, the most effective savings come from selecting the right bracing pattern, leg slope and section shape, which together control wind area and tonnage. On platforms and access structures, we standardize stair, ladder and handrail modules and use galvanized bolted assemblies that eliminate site welding. Designing equipment supports with the supplier interface fixed early avoids redesign later, protecting both fabrication schedule and installation dates.
-
Fabrication Solutions
Members include angle and tubular tower legs and bracing, built-up platform beams, grating and checker plate decks, stair stringers, ladders with cages and heavy equipment base frames. Tower sections are fabricated with precise bolt hole patterns so that splices assemble without reaming. Where fit-up is critical, tower panels or equipment frames can be trial assembled in the shop. Every piece is marked with section, face and elevation references matching the erection drawings.
-
Quality Assurance
We prepare an inspection and test plan tailored to the structure type, including traceability of all members through mill certificates and heat numbers. NDT is selected according to joint type and fatigue sensitivity, such as magnetic particle testing on base plate welds and ultrasonic testing on full-penetration joints. Dimensional checks confirm hole patterns, verticality references and interface geometry. All results are compiled in a QC dossier per the execution or welding standard specified.
-
Surface Protection
Towers and outdoor platforms are frequently exposed to C4, C5 or CX conditions in coastal, offshore-adjacent or industrial settings. Hot-dip galvanizing to ISO 1461 or AS/NZS 4680 is our preferred protection for bolted towers and access steel, with duplex systems combining galvanizing and ISO 12944 paint where longer maintenance intervals or color marking are needed. Fasteners are specified with matching corrosion protection.
-
Export & Logistics
Bolted towers and modular access structures are well suited to containerized shipping, with members bundled by tower section or platform module and fasteners packed in labeled kits. Larger equipment frames and pre-assembled platforms travel as break-bulk with transport bracing. We sequence shipments by erection zone and issue packing lists, bolt kit registers and export documentation with every consignment.
-
Erection Support
We supply erection drawings showing assembly order, bolt tightening requirements and temporary guying or bracing where needed. Our team provides input to method statements for tower stacking, gin-pole or crane lifts, and platform installation around existing equipment. When agreed, our engineers offer technical supervision or advisory visits for critical stages, while the appointed erection contractor performs all site work.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you design towers to a specific deflection or twist limit?
Yes. We agree the serviceability criteria with the client or equipment supplier and design the tower geometry and bracing to satisfy them. The design report documents how each criterion is checked.
Are your towers bolted or welded?
Most towers are designed as galvanized bolted assemblies, which ship efficiently and avoid site welding. Welded sections are used where the design or interface requires them.
Can you design access platforms around existing equipment?
We work from site surveys or point-cloud data supplied by the client to fit platforms, stairs and supports around existing plant, then confirm clearances in the BIM model before fabrication.
