Bracing Systems
Portal Bracing for Open Bays in Steel Buildings
Definition: Portal bracing is a small rigid frame, made of a beam and columns with moment connections, placed in a wall bay to resist longitudinal forces where diagonal bracing is not acceptable. It keeps the bay open for doors, traffic or connections to adjacent buildings.

Key facts
- Used where doors, openings or traffic prevent diagonal bracing.
- Often placed below the eave strut and attached to main frame columns.
- Uses moment connections, typically bolted.
- Heavier and more expensive than rod bracing.
- May require fixed bases or larger anchor bolts.
Role in the structure
Like diagonal bracing, portal bracing carries longitudinal forces from the eave down to the foundations, but it does so through bending of its beam and columns instead of tension in diagonals. It is usually more flexible and heavier than rod bracing, so the engineer checks drift as well as strength.
When should portal bracing be used?
Portal bracing is useful in buildings where every bay along a wall needs openings, such as cross-dock warehouses, vehicle shelters and workshops. It is also used where a building connects to another structure.
Where possible, engineers prefer to place rod bracing in solid bays and use portal bracing only where needed, because portals are more costly.
How does a portal brace resist load?
The beam and columns form a small frame. Longitudinal force at the top produces moments at the beam-column joints and possibly at the base, depending on fixity.
Drift must be limited so that doors, cladding and cranes work properly. A stiffer portal may be required in crane buildings.
Can bracing be used above the door instead?
Sometimes, a shallow bracing panel or a portal beam above a door can work with the main columns. The best solution depends on door height and eave height.
Alternatives include moving the braced bay or using wind columns. The engineer compares options.
How does portal bracing affect cost and layout?
A portal brace adds beams, moment connections and sometimes heavier anchor bolts or foundations, so each portal costs more than a set of rod diagonals. In many buildings that cost is small compared with the operational value of keeping a bay fully open.
The beam of the portal sits below the eave and reduces the clear height of the bay slightly. Owners should state the clear opening height needed for doors and vehicles so the engineer can set the portal beam depth and position accordingly.
How is portal bracing coordinated with doors?
The portal columns are often placed at the door jambs and the portal beam doubles as the door header, which keeps framing simple. Door guides, hoods and operators then fix to the portal members.
Door suppliers need the final portal dimensions before detailing, so the portal arrangement should be agreed early in the shop drawing stage.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is portal bracing as stiff as rod bracing?
Usually less stiff, so drift is checked carefully.
Can portal bracing be added later?
Yes, with engineering design, to replace diagonals when a new door is cut in.
Does portal bracing need special foundations?
Sometimes, if the base is fixed or reactions are large.
