Engineering Tools
Steel Weight Calculator
Theoretical weight of steel plate, flat bar, round bar, CHS, RHS, SHS and welded I-sections built from plates.
For preliminary estimates only. These tools are not structural design or code-compliance checks. Results must be verified by a qualified engineer against the project specification, the applicable standards and the manufacturer's data before use in design, procurement or fabrication.
Enter the dimensions and press Calculate.
Assumptions
- Weight = cross-section area × length × density.
- Density of steel taken as 7850 kg/m³ (nominal value commonly used for carbon and low-alloy structural steel).
- Nominal dimensions; geometry is idealised with sharp corners and no root radii.
Units
- Dimensions in millimetres (mm) or inches (in); 1 in = 25.4 mm.
- Weight in kilograms (kg) or pounds (lb); 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg. Weight per length is also shown in kg/m and lb/ft.
Limitations
- Rolling and fabrication tolerances, corner radii of hollow sections, weld metal, coatings and galvanizing are not included.
- Hollow sections with rounded corners weigh slightly less than calculated here; use the manufacturer's or standard's tabulated values for ordering.
- Stainless steel and other alloys have different densities; results do not apply to them.
- Not a structural check: the result says nothing about strength, stability or suitability of a section.
