Sector challenges
Challenges We Engineer For
Vibration-sensitive clinical and lab spaces
Our engineering response We tune beam stiffness, bay size and slab mass to the vibration criteria for each room type rather than applying one floor solution throughout.
Dense services in limited floor depth
Our engineering response Cellular beams and coordinated web openings let ducts and pipes pass through the structure, keeping floor-to-floor heights efficient.
Building beside occupied facilities
Our engineering response Phased erection drawings and zone-based deliveries keep lifts short, predictable and away from patient or student routes.
Future adaptability
Our engineering response Floors can be designed for agreed reconfiguration allowances so that departments can change use without major strengthening.
Engineering Solutions
Hospitals, laboratories and campus buildings place demanding serviceability requirements on the frame. Our engineering team selects bay sizes, beam depths and composite floor arrangements that satisfy the vibration criteria set for operating theatres, imaging suites and research spaces, while keeping floor-to-floor heights efficient for dense mechanical services. Lateral systems are chosen to suit seismic and wind demands and to leave plan layouts flexible.
Many healthcare facilities are designated as essential buildings, so we apply the elevated importance and post-event functionality expectations of codes such as ASCE 7, NBCC or the applicable Eurocode national annex, as identified by the engineer of record. Connection design considers service penetrations, heavy equipment hangers and future reconfiguration loads.
Engineering Considerations
- Floor vibration criteria for operating theatres and laboratories
- Services integration and future adaptability
- Fire resistance and compartmentation
- Construction on or next to operating campuses
One coordinated scope
From Engineering to Delivery on Site
Design optimization, fabrication, quality control, surface protection, export logistics and erection support managed as one scope, so interfaces between design, shop and site stay under control.
-
Design Optimization
Savings in healthcare and education come from a regular structural grid that suits clinical planning modules and classroom layouts. We coordinate beam web openings with ductwork and medical gas routes to reduce floor depth, size composite beams to meet vibration targets without excess tonnage, and standardize connection types across the building. Steel framing also enables phased delivery, letting new wings or floors progress while adjacent departments or classrooms stay in operation.
-
Fabrication Solutions
Typical members include composite floor beams with shear studs, cellular or castellated beams with service openings, braced-frame columns and moment-connected elements where open plans are required. Web openings are cut and reinforced to the approved details, and stud welding follows qualified procedures. Tolerance control focuses on beam levels and camber so that slabs finish flat for sensitive equipment rooms. Each piece is marked by building zone, level and grid to support phased erection on busy campuses.
-
Quality Assurance
We prepare an inspection and test plan covering material receipt, fit-up, welding and coating, with mill certificates traced to every primary member. NDT is selected to joint type, for example ultrasonic testing on moment connections and visual plus bend testing of shear studs. Dimensional checks verify opening positions, camber and connection geometry. All records are collected in a QC dossier meeting the welding and execution requirements specified for the project.
-
Surface Protection
Most hospital and school framing sits in internal C1 to C2 environments, so protection is often driven by fire rather than corrosion. We coordinate primers compatible with the specified intumescent or board fire protection, and can apply intumescent coatings in the shop to reduce site work near occupied areas. Canopies, walkways and plant screens exposed to weather receive ISO 12944 systems or hot-dip galvanizing appropriate to their exposure.
-
Export & Logistics
Healthcare and campus sites usually have limited laydown space and strict delivery windows. We pack steel by phase, level and erection zone so each load can be lifted directly into place, and schedule shipments to match the agreed sequence. Containerized shipments suit most framing members, with longer elements moving as break-bulk. Export documentation, packing lists and piece-mark registers travel with each consignment.
-
Erection Support
For buildings next to operating hospitals or schools, sequencing matters as much as speed. We provide erection drawings, stability guidance for partially completed frames and input to method statements covering crane positions, exclusion zones and out-of-hours lifts. Sequence planning aligns with phased handovers. When agreed, our engineers offer technical advisory support on site, while the appointed erection contractor carries out the work.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can steel floors meet vibration criteria for operating theatres and laboratories?
Yes, when the floor system is designed for it from the start. We assess each sensitive area against the criteria set by the medical planner or equipment supplier and adjust beam stiffness, bay sizes and slab mass accordingly.
How do you handle fire protection in hospital steel frames?
We coordinate the fire strategy with the design team, select compatible primers and can apply intumescent coatings in the shop. This reduces site spraying near occupied areas and improves quality control of coating thickness.
Can you support phased construction on a live campus?
We organize design, fabrication and shipping by phase and zone. Erection drawings and delivery schedules follow the handover sequence so that each phase can be completed without disrupting adjacent operations.
