Steel Structures for Southeast Asia

Regional steel supply across Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia and the Philippines, where each country's code basis differs and tropical durability drives coating choices.

Market Overview

Southeast Asia is not one regulatory market. Singapore and Malaysia have adopted Eurocode-based design with national annexes; the Philippines uses its National Structural Code (NSCP); Vietnam and Indonesia have national standards (TCVN and SNI respectively), and many industrial projects across the region are designed to AISC or Eurocodes by international consultants.

The common thread is a hot, humid and often coastal environment, rapid industrial growth in logistics, manufacturing and data centres, and a mix of local and imported materials.

Codes, Approvals & Regulatory Context

The design code, material acceptance rules and approval process must be confirmed country by country. Some jurisdictions restrict which material standards may be used without additional testing, and typhoon or earthquake provisions vary considerably between locations.

Engineering for this Market

Projects often need engineering in two systems at once: design to the governing national code and material specifications in ASTM, JIS or EN. Clear documentation of material equivalence and units avoids delays at approval.

Fabrication Considerations

Pre-engineered buildings and portal frames are widespread for factories and warehouses, while heavier built-up members are used for crane buildings, power and petrochemical structures.

Quality Requirements

  • Code basis and material equivalence confirmed for each country
  • Mill certificates in the format accepted by the local authority
  • Inspection and test plans agreed with the EPC or consultant
  • Welding qualification to the standard named in the specification (often AWS D1.1 or EN ISO)

Coating Requirements

  • High-humidity and coastal exposure (often C4–C5 per ISO 12944) for coastal sites
  • Hot-dip galvanizing for purlins, girts and exposed members
  • Coating systems tolerant of tropical application conditions

Certifications Typically Requested by Clients

  • Country-specific product or material acceptance where applicable
  • Fabricator quality management system (ISO 9001 is commonly requested)
  • Welding procedures to the specified standard

Export & Logistics

Regional ports such as Singapore, Port Klang, Laem Chabang, Hai Phong, Ho Chi Minh City, Tanjung Priok and Manila allow short sea transit within the region. Island logistics in Indonesia and the Philippines may require transhipment and smaller packages.
