Steel Structures for Canada
Steelwork for Canadian projects to CSA S16 design and CSA W59 welding, with welding-company certification and cold-climate material considerations planned from the start.

Market Overview
Canadian structural steel is designed to CSA S16 within the National Building Code of Canada (NBCC) as adopted, sometimes with amendments, by each province or territory. Structural welding follows CSA W59, and companies performing structural welding are generally required to be certified under CSA W47.1.
Climate matters: low service temperatures can make notch toughness requirements part of the material order, and snow and wind loads in many regions govern roof and cladding design.
Codes, Approvals & Regulatory Context
Each province adopts its own building code based on the NBCC, so the applicable edition and amendments must be confirmed for the project location. Welding-company certification to CSA W47.1 is normally checked before fabrication starts; foreign fabricators must plan for this early.
Engineering for this Market
Connection design is often delegated to the fabricator's engineer, who must be licensed in the province where the work is built. Drawings are generally metric, although imperial dimensions still appear on some industrial projects.
Fabrication Considerations
Material is commonly ordered to CSA G40.21 grades (for example 350W) or equivalent ASTM grades accepted by the engineer. Where specified, impact-tested grades (such as "AT" categories) are needed for low-temperature service.
Quality Requirements
- CSA W47.1 welding-company certification
- Welding procedures accepted under the certification body's system
- Mill certificates showing chemistry, mechanical and impact properties where specified
- Dimensional checks against CSA S16 fabrication tolerances
Coating Requirements
- Coating systems for freeze-thaw cycles and de-icing salt exposure on transport structures
- Hot-dip galvanizing (commonly to ASTM A123) for exposed members
- Fire protection compatibility of shop primers
Certifications Typically Requested by Clients
- CSA W47.1 certification for the welding company
- CSA W178.2 certified welding inspectors where specified
- Professional engineer licence in the project province for delegated design
Export & Logistics
Imports arrive mainly via Vancouver, Montreal or Halifax, with rail or road transport to site. Seasonal road weight restrictions in spring and winter shipping conditions can constrain delivery windows.
