Specialist Steel Structure Solutions

Oil, Gas & Petrochemical Structures

Pipe racks, process equipment supports, platforms, modular skids and access structures for process plants.

Solution Overview

Process plants use owner specifications that add requirements on top of national standards — for materials, welding, coatings, inspection and documentation. Modular pipe racks and skids are frequently assembled off-site and shipped as complete units.

Typical Applications

  • Pipe Racks
  • Process Equipment Supports
  • Industrial Platforms
  • Modular Steel Skids
  • Access Structures

Sector challenges

Challenges We Engineer For

  • Layered owner specifications

Our engineering response We build a compliance matrix of owner, EPC and code requirements so design, welding, coating and documentation all meet the governing rule.

  • Thermal and anchor loads

Our engineering response Piping stress data is integrated into the rack analysis, with anchor bays and guides designed specifically for their load paths.

  • Fireproofing coordination

Our engineering response Fireproofing extents are confirmed early so member sizes, clearances and connection details account for the protection system.

  • Module transport and lifting

Our engineering response Lift, transport and sea-fastening cases are checked in design, and lifting points and support locations are defined on the drawings.

Engineering Solutions

Process plant structures are designed to owner and EPC specifications that sit on top of national codes. Our engineering team analyzes pipe racks, equipment structures and modules for piping operating and thermal loads, anchor and guide forces, friction, wind and seismic actions, and, where the hazard study requires, blast overpressure. Load combinations for transport, lifting and sea-fastening are included for modular units, and the code basis is confirmed with the client engineering contractor at project start.

Connection design follows the project specification for bolting, weld types and minimum details. Moment and braced connections in pipe racks are standardized, while anchor points and equipment supports are designed individually for their specific loads. We coordinate closely with piping, mechanical and electrical disciplines in the BIM model so that supports, trunnions, cable trays and platforms are all reflected before shop drawings are released.

Engineering Considerations

  • Owner and EPC specifications for materials, welding and documentation
  • Fireproofing of structural steel in hydrocarbon fire zones
  • Blast, thermal and pipe anchor loads
  • Module lifting, sea-fastening and transport

One coordinated scope

From Engineering to Delivery on Site

Design optimization, fabrication, quality control, surface protection, export logistics and erection support managed as one scope, so interfaces between design, shop and site stay under control.

  1. Design Optimization

Pipe racks and modules offer significant savings through standardization. We rationalize bent spacing, tier elevations and member families so that a limited set of connection types covers most of the structure. Modularizing racks and skids moves labor from site to shop, improving quality and reducing time in hazardous areas. Early coordination of fireproofing extents also matters, because fireproofing weight and thickness affect member sizing, clearances and the overall structural program.

  2. Fabrication Solutions

Members include rolled and built-up pipe rack bents, longitudinal struts, equipment support frames, modular skids, platforms, stairs and ladders. Welding procedures are qualified to the AWS D1.1 or EN 1090 execution class requirements specified, along with any additional owner requirements for material testing or weld procedure review. Modules are dimensionally controlled for piping fit-up and trial-assembled where interfaces are critical, and piece marks, module numbers and lifting points are clearly identified.

  3. Quality Assurance

Oil and gas specifications usually require detailed documentation. We work to a project inspection and test plan with client witness and hold points, full material traceability from mill certificates to piece marks, NDT to the scope required for primary and critical welds, and dimensional reports for modules, anchor points and nozzle-sensitive supports. The QC dossier is compiled to the owner documentation index, ready for review and inclusion in the project handover records.

  4. Surface Protection

Process plants are often coastal or industrial environments with chemical exposure, so coating systems are typically selected for ISO 12944 C5 or CX categories using owner-approved paint systems. Galvanizing is common for platforms, gratings and secondary steel. Where structures are in hydrocarbon fire zones, we coordinate passive fire protection, such as cementitious or intumescent systems, with the fireproofing specification, ensuring compatibility with primers and detailing for application and inspection.

  5. Export & Logistics

We plan packing and shipping to support modular and stick-built strategies alike. Modules and skids are prepared for lifting and sea-fastening with defined support points, while stick-built steel is bundled by rack section and erection zone. Bolts, gaskets and small items are packed by area. Shipments are documented with detailed packing lists, marking schedules and export paperwork aligned to the owner and EPC material management requirements.

  6. Erection Support

We support erection contractors with erection drawings, module lift data and sequence planning that aligns with piping installation. Our engineers can provide input to method statements for heavy module lifts and temporary stability, and review set-down and tie-in details at site. Where agreed, we provide technical supervision or advisory visits during module installation, rack alignment and fireproofing interface checks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you work to owner specifications from major oil and gas operators?

Yes. We review the owner and EPC specifications together with the code basis and prepare a compliance matrix. Any deviations or clarifications are raised before fabrication so they can be resolved early.

Do you apply fireproofing in the shop?

Fireproofing scope depends on the system and project strategy. We coordinate the fireproofing interface, prepare steel with compatible primers and detail members for application. Shop-applied or site-applied fireproofing is agreed in the proposal.

Can you supply modular pipe racks ready for piping installation?

Yes. We design and fabricate rack modules with dimensional control suited to piping fit-up, and we can coordinate with piping fabricators on interfaces. Lifting and transport requirements are included in the design.
