Braced Frames
Frames stabilised by diagonal, X, K or chevron bracing — typically the most steel-efficient lateral system.
Technical Overview
Braced frames carry lateral loads through axial forces in bracing members, allowing simple pinned beam-to-column connections elsewhere. Brace layout must be coordinated with openings and circulation.
Applications
- Multi-storey buildings with cores
- Industrial structures and pipe racks
- Towers and platforms
Engineering Considerations
- Brace slenderness and connection design forces
- Gusset plate design and clearance
- Load path to foundations and collector beams
- Seismic concentric or eccentric braced frame rules where applicable
Fabrication Considerations
- Simple bolted connections speed up erection
- Gusset plate geometry needs careful detailing
